My View of AI Usage in Learning and Development

The field of Learning and Development is vulnerable to fads and band wagons. These fads rarely have much, if any, impact on the L&D field.

The use of Artificial Intelligence in L&D is NOT a fad. It is a true game changer. It is making rapid learning development a reality, but we must use it in a way that respects content authors, our learners and security of our client’s data.

In alignment with the standards set by the Association for Talent Development (ATD) and The Learning Guild, I integrate Artificial Intelligence into my instructional design workflow as a strategic partner. My approach follows a “Human-in-the-Loop” framework to ensure that efficiency never comes at the cost of instructional integrity.

I view AI as a high-level Researcher and Technical Editor, not a primary creator. My process adheres to the following pillars:

  • Strategic Architecture: I remain in the “driver’s seat” for all high-level design decisions. Learning objectives, pedagogical strategies, and behavioral outcomes are defined by human expertise, not algorithms.
  • Rigorous Interrogation: No AI-generated content is ever deployed without human verification. I critically evaluate all outputs for accuracy, bias, tone, and relevance to the target audience.
  • Data-Driven Efficiency: I leverage AI to synthesize research, draft initial outlines, and iterate on scripts. This reduces development cycles and allows me to focus more time on high-impact tasks like SME interviewing and learner empathy mapping.
  • Privacy & Ethics: I maintain strict data privacy standards, ensuring that proprietary client information is never used to train public AI models.

The Value for Stakeholders

By combining the human touch with AI speed, I deliver learning solutions that are:

Future-Proof: Content is built using the most current industry tools and methodologies.

Faster to Market: Reduced development time means quicker turnaround on complex modules.

Higher Quality: More time is spent on creative problem-solving and quality assurance.
